JDSU's patented CleanBlast systems revolutionized fiber optic connector cleaning when they were released in 2004. Since then, users have become raving-fans as they have seen their cleaning minutes and dollars reduced to seconds and pennies.
CleanBlast systems utilize a highly filtered stream of pressurized gas in conjunction with a vacuum circuit to create a high flow rate jet across the surface of the fiber. Once established, 30 micro liters of cleaning solvent is injected into the flow. The entire cleaning cycle takes less than 1 second (bench systems) and the repeatability of the cleaning process is absolutely remarkable.
A complete system requires a base unit and a cleaning tip suitable for the connector being cleaned. When choosing a base unit, there is a choice between “Bench” and “Portable”. Bench systems require the user to supply both electricity and compressed gas (air or nitrogen). Portable systems have a built-in compressor and only require a source of power (100-250V, 50-60Hz).
Cleaning tips are available for both male connectors and female receptacle or bulkhead adapters. While the system works equally well on both, the highest level of value is found by users who are cleaning through the alignment sleeve (or in some way dificult to access). It should be noted that CleanBlast systems are designed to remove generally loose debris. They work well with attached debris and dried-on residue, but are not aggressive enough produce the outstanding performance they are known for. For that reason, it is strongly recommended through the manufacturing and installation process. When used prior to each mating, the cleaning effectiveness is nearly 100%. However, when used to clean fibers that have already been mated, a swab is sometimes needed to dislodge the particles and then the CleanBlast system can be used to remove the particles completely.
Several of the largest companies in the industry allot 3-5 swabs per port to clean receptacles and approximately 4 minutes to execute the cycle. In total, estimates run from $3-$5 per port to clean a receptacle. Using a CleanBlasttm system, those companies now estimate $0.01 for cleaning solvent and less than 20 seconds per port. Conservatively, that equates to a savings of approximately $2.85 per port cleaned ($3 per port with swabs less $0.14 in labor and $0.01 in solvent with CleanBlast). In many of these companies, a single unit is able to clean over 500 ports per day. At that rate, the unit has paid for itself in just over 2 days! In factories manufacturing TOSA/ROSA assemblies or transceivers, the calculations are basically the same, but the volume can be as high as 2,000 ports on a single machine in a single day! Those customers have purchased our machines and are now completely reliant on them for efficient manufacturing.
All systems include an input port for a probe microscope as the two products are commonly used together. All models include a video output that can be connected to an external monitor or to a mounted LCD optionally available from Westover. “Digital” cleaning machines include an additional video output to a USB port so the image can be brought to a PC for documentation or display.
Inexpensive external exhaust filters are available for bench units that eliminate nearly all vapors. These are not required, but can be helpful when used in high volumes in poorly ventilated rooms.
The system’s solvent reservoir is good for approximately 8,000 cleaning cycles (more when cleaning only 1.25mm connectors). When refill is required Westover sells cleaning solvent in 8 ounce bottles and with a refill cap assembly that makes the process simple and spill-resistant.
A built-in safety prevents the handset from actuating the cleaning cycle unless it is pressed into something (bulkhead adapter). While this can be defeated if necessary, it protects against accidental solvent discharge. The system monitors solvent levels and the safety switch and provides a series of LED’s on the front panel to monitor status.
Bench systems require the user provide 50-250 psi of compressed air or nitrogen. All systems include internal filters, but the more the input gas is filtered the longer the system’s filters will perform.
